Genus:

Photinus

Species:

pyralis

Observation Notes:

Fireflies over and in trees, low over mowed lawns of homes. In my backyard. Flashing. Normal look to the insect, body length normal. Same amount over sod mowed lawns as in back cut wild fields. Have been seen since June. Also seen low to grass but 20ft up in wild cherry trees flashing and in maple tree. Has been here yearly for at least 10 years, about same number of 30-50 in area. They have not flashed synchronized though, mostly random and with some time between lights. Have seen them resting on window screen of house during the day too. Yellow abdomen noted. Black and red narrow body. (Did not stay up all night to get last flash time.) Most flashes looked yellow, but a few greenish.
