Habitat Type Notes:

This is an improved spring for native fishes with a small dug pool that was stocked with desert pupfish. A small wet cienega with primarily sedges as a ground cover. The ground is saturated with some very small areas of standing water. Trees at the site include cottonwoods, mesquites and ashes. It is located on a ridge top within about .25 miles from the Bass and double R drainages where Bw has been verified in previous years.

This is a remote site with little light pollution. It is very near a dirt road that has some daily traffic but relatively rare at night.

Specimens collected were paired with flash data for each specimen for comparison with specimens collected in previous years. These specimens flash faster and more often than specimens collected from this site in previous years in June.

Flash Location:

Flashes are most common just above the sedge vegetation but also extend higher and into surrounding trees. Flash behavior typically starts at or near sunset.

Male Flash Behavior:

Males perch on or fly low over the sedge vegetation, sometimes extending out up to 5 yards beyond the sedge community into the surrounding desert landscape, and also sometimes up into the trees on the site.

Female Flash Behavior:

Females are typically perched on vegetation flashing.
