This is a fairly dark campground, although the office and bathroom areas have motion sensitive lighting which is typcially on, but doesn't extend quite as far as the stream, where a lot of fireflies hang out. Occasionally a car will pass thru. But, it's a fairly quiet campground and not a lot of campers use outdoor lighting.

Observation Notes:

Have seen a fireflies in the area bordering the stream, but also elsewhere in the campground. Was not able to observe them closely. Not sure if the fireflies here are synchronous fireflies, but they are known to be in Virginia. Will try to determine another time. Started observation at 8:50 pm, but they were probably flashing before then.

  1. Thank you for submitting this firefly observation! Based on the yellow flash color and the early evening display time, it is possible that these fireflies were in the genus Photinus, but it’s hard to say for sure. This region likely does have synchronous fireflies (Photinus carolinus), but adults wouldn’t be active this late in the season.
