Area where observations occurred is former cattle land that has been developed into housing lots with acreage. Observation site was in a field on one of these acreages. Field where observations occurred is unmowed and has abundant plants and grasses native to the area (buffalo grass, yarrow, silverleaf night shade, coreopsis, milkweed, Indian blanket, horsemint). The land undulates and has peaks and valleys were water can collect/flow.

There is some artificial light that can be seen from house windows, but none of it is cast onto the observation field. Neighborhood has no streetlights and very slight vehicular traffic. No backyard lights or floodlights were observed.

Observation Notes:

Flashes occurred primarily along the edges of the tall grass field with some seen over/among the tall grass. Most flashes occurred midrange from 3 to 8 ft off the ground. Some observed on the ground in the grass. Flashes were yellow.

  1. A belated thank-you for this firefly observation! There are about 18 species of flashing firefly in Oklahoma, and it is hard to make identifications without photos of the firefly up-close, but some possibilities given the location, habitat and time of year include Photuris sp., Photinus pyralis, Photinus dimissus, Photinus granulatus, and Photuris divisa.
